If being able to recharge your future collection of batteries “a thousand times more” than your existing stockpile sounds enticing, a team of NC State physicists now have your attention. Thanks to their research on the electromechanical properties of the commonly used polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), they have discovered that when combined with CTFE (that’s yet another polymer), it may allow capacitors to store “up to seven times more energy than those currently in use.” According to Vivek Ranjan, the process moves atoms within the material “in order to make the polymer rearrange with the least voltage,” and this storage booster could even be used to allow electric cars of the future to sport the “same acceleration capability as a gas-powered sports car.” Sounds like more than a few manufacturers are desperate for something like this, eh?

There are plenty of unanswered questions about the FBI spyware that, as we reported earlier this week, can be delivered over the Internet and implanted in a suspect’s computer remotely. Many of the questions hearken back to the old debate over the FBI’s Carnivore wiretapping system, which technical luminaries Steve Bellovin, Matt Blaze…

If you thought hoisting a giant banana above Texas was outrageous, you may indeed chuckle to learn that a 1,400-pound refrigerator-sized container of ammonia will be jettisoned from the International Space Station next week. On July 23rd, to be precise, Expedition 15 crew member Clayton Anderson will have the, um, privilege of heading outside in order to toss “two large hunks of unneeded equipment towards Earth,” and once ejected, they will be tracked by NASA for an entire year until they finally begin to enter the atmosphere. Notably, officials are still not sure where the debris will land just yet, but if you happen to find your fridge replaced with a partially disintegrated (albeit similarly sized) container of fetid material in the next year or two, you’ll know exactly what went awry.

Although we’ve certainly come across prosthetics with names similar to that of a fun-loving canine, we don’t believe we’ve ever seen a pup actually become the receipiant of one. Nevertheless, the Surrey-based Belgian Shepherd (named Storm) had to undergo a leg amputation due to an agreesive tumor, but rather than allowing it to live out its life minus a limb, Noel Fitzpatrick decided to operate further. Now, Storm has reportedly become the “world’s first pet to be fitted with a prosthetic paw,” and moreover, the device has actually been installed in a manner that will allow skin to “grow into the metal.” Best of all, the veterianarian hopes that “it will act as a model for human amputees,” and if this approach gains traction, it could provide hope for humans in the future “without feet or hands.”
