Look, Dan Hesse is an intelligent individual, which means he knew good and well that he’d start a flame war when making one particular comment to the National Press Club in Washington. The CEO of Sprint casually proclaimed that he didn’t feel Android (in its current form) was “good enough to put the Sprint brand on.” In all fairness, Sprint has shown a friendly side to Google in the past, and he did promise to sell an Android-powered phone “at some time in the future,” but asserting that Sprint is in the position to shy away from what’s arguably the most exciting thing to happen to the mobile realm since the advent of the iPhone is, um, questionable at best.

Sprint’s AIRAVE signal booster isn’t officially on sale nationwide just yet (August 17th, for those curious), but for those anxious to pull the trigger (or merely mulling the decision), we’ve got a few hands-on shots to whet your appetite. So, where are they? Why, over at Engadget Mobile, that’s where! Keep an eye out for a review to pop shortly.

Quite a few Instinct owners were giving Samsung / Sprint one option: crank out a firmware update to show that they cared before the 30-day test period expired, or deal with all that messy RMA paperwork. Unfortunately for the aforesaid firms, the handset’s first update is coming ten days after that date (at least for the earliest of adopters), and initial reports suggest that glaring problems still exist. Some users are suggesting that Sprint TV is less pixelated than before and that overall snappiness is improved, but the patently awful browser still remains at 1.0 (and thus just as awful). Look, when the change that gets most people jazzed is the battery meter’s newfound ability to hit 100% (and not just 90% as in the past), something is seriously wrong. Anyone else find any nuggets of goodness in the new update?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: A bigger, more life-changing update looks to be planned — hang tight, Instinct owners!

We heard you poor souls loud and clear — hoping, begging, praying for a CDMA Curve announcement during CES. Apparently, said device is on the way. According to non-blurry (gasp!) pictures over at BBGeeks, the CDMA Curve is rockin’ a 8330 model number, integrated GPS, built-in camera and a temporary sticker on the back warning that what you’re looking at is absolutely not for sale under any circumstances. Excited? You should be, now hit up the read link and take a peek.

The Dark Age of Nokia’s CDMA relations may be finally drawing to a close. After a series of forgettable rebranded Pantechs (seriously Nokia, what the crap was up with that?), we were encouraged last year by the introduction of the rather low-end 2135 candybar, an honest-to-goodness Nokia that seemed to indicate Nokia / Qualcomm relations might — might be warming. This device features EV-DO data and Bluetooth, but that’s about all we can gather from the few FCC docs that aren’t protected by the confidentiality clause at the moment; we don’t know who it might be headed for, whether it runs S40 or S60, or any other juicy little bits of information that would make the Nokia faithful on Verizon and Sprint drool. We’ll pass along details as we get ‘em, of course.

If you’ve been patiently awaiting details about, well, a whole slew of handsets, chances are that a recent Sprint event held the answers to a-many of those very questions. First up was the Palm Centro (also coined Gandolf and Treo 800), which you’ve already seen plenty of earlier today. Moving on, the Sprint Touch (read: CDMA) was said to be rockin’ a potent 400MHz CPU, and it also touted EV-DO, 128MB of RAM, a two-megapixel camera, built-in GPS “to be activated in a Rev A upgrade,” and a likely launch date in November. Furthermore, an EV-DO BlackBerry Pearl was on display along with a “petite candybar” from Sanyo, the sliding LG Rumor, and the Sprint Airave home cell site (once known as the Samsung Ubicell). We know you’re craving the dirt on all of the aforementioned gizmos, so be sure and hit the read link for the full skinny.

It’s been just under two months since getting a whiff of the forthcoming S640, and now it’s time for US-based CDMA users to (officially) celebrate, as FCC documentation has finally outed the HTC Iris S640. The paperwork shows that the smartphone will indeed operate on CDMA850 / 1900 bands, include WiFi and Bluetooth, offer up EV-DO connectivity, and sport USB for syncing and charging. Additionally, the handset will reportedly tout a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution LCD and a two-megapixel camera, and while it doesn’t look like this one will be aimed at the elitists in the crowd, it should do quite well as a low-to-mid-range smartphone on whichever CDMA carrier(s) it ends up on.
