DirecTV intros two ATSC tuner AM21 to piggyback HR21

If your DirecTV HR21 leaves you feeling empty because you want need to streamline your over-the-air ATSC side of the house, listen up. DirecTV’s AM21 is your answer. For $59, you can pick one up, stack it above or below your HR21, connect it via USB, and bask in the glow of dual tuner ATSC programming (integrated with your OSG, to boot). It’s not a bad looking little black box at all, and the price is reasonable. It’s being shown off at CES, and you can expect it to be available at the end of February.

DirecTV HR21-200

DirecTV’s new hardware rollout has been in the making for some time and now the latest addition to the lineup has been officially unveiled at CEDIA. The HR21-200 was leaked last week, and we’ve seen prototypes at other shows, but now the prosumer DVR will finally go into production around the end of October and offers some nice features for custom installers — or anyone who’s serious about their home theater — like being rack mountable without a Middle Atlantic shelf, having a built in fiber HDMI port for long runs, or double the storage capacity of the HR20 (about 100 hours of MPEG-4 HD). In fact, the only downside seems to be the omission of OTA tuners, which is a non-issue if DirecTV HD locals are available in your area, but that can be a drag until DirecTV adds all the HD locals in every market.

DirecTV’s booth seemed entirely too small for the amount of people and LCD TVs that were stuffed within, but we survived long enough to catch a few shots of the newfangled HR21 Pro DVR and to hear some not-so-encouraging words about the next rollout of HD offerings. You know the deal, hop on over here for the rest of the dirt.

DirecTV HR21 Pro HD DVR
We first stumbled upon a prototype of the DirecTV D-HR20P DVR at Electronic House Expo last year, but haven’t heard anything about it since then. Now with CEDIA coming up, a promo image of what could be the next evolution in this design has been leaked, the HR21 Pro. The DVR will reportedly handle 100 hours of high-def recording and output it at 1080p over optical HDMI, but lacks any over-the-air antenna inputs, probably due to DirecTV’s 100-channel rollout plan. We should see it in November, so clear out some rackmount space… you do have a rack to mount it in, right?

NFL Sunday ticketYou can now watch NFL football over the interwebs, free from regional restrictions! Excited? We thought so — here’s what you’ll need. First, sign up for DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket ($269/year). Second, add in the “SuperFan” program (an additional $99/year). Third, you’ll need a Windows PC (sorry Mac users). Once all that is squared away, you can enjoy watching live games webwide in Internet Explorer. Meh, says we, especially when you look at MLB.TV. Admittedly, the SuperFan package is required for HD delivery of the games on DirecTV anyways (which the internet feed definitely won’t be), so chances are that football nuts may already have these packages lined up. The NFL is keeping tight control over their content, but this is a step in the right direction. Meanwhile, “misplacing” a Slingbox at your buddy’s place in another region is looking better and better.

It’s been a long time comin’, but it looks like DirecTV’s bonafide video-on-demand service is nearly ready for primetime. Judging by a descriptive thread over at DBSTalk, the service — dubbed DirecTV on Demand — has been rolled out in beta form to at least some users, so here’s a quick look at what you can expect. First off, DoD will reportedly “be available for internet connected HR20’s that are running on a compatible version of software,” and requires that a user request a program via the ‘net or through their HR20, after which the DVR “downloads that content via the internet, and stores the downloaded content just like any other recorded program.” Feel free to hit the read link for all the nitty-gritty details, but for those into abridged versions, click on through for a few key points…
