You’re probably wondering if adding in a fourth panel to an LCD projector is really worthwhile. Actually, you’re probably willing to bet your bottom dollar that it’s a gimmick. Sound & Vision took the time to actually critique Sanyo’s latest with an open mind, and believe it or not, it found the all new QuaDrive technology to be everything it was hyped up to be. To be fair, the PLC-XP200L isn’t tailored for the home theater; the lowly 1,024 x 768 resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio sound downright appalling. However, reviewers focused more on the actual technology / image quality given that Sanyo already has a compact, quieter, 16:9 QuaDrive beamer slated for 2009. During a demonstration, critics found the new tech to be visibly better than 3LCD rivals, with the picture appearing “dramatically more vivid.” Should you rush out and buy the XP200L? Probably not. But you may just want to delay your impending PJ purchase until that HT version hits next year.

Sanyo just made official what’s been rumored since August: the sale of its troubled cellphone division to Kyocera. The deal is set for completion on April 1st at a value of about $350 million. The deal involves about 2,000 employees moving from Sanyo’s mobile phone operation to Kyocera where they can reminisce with ex-Qualcommers about the good ol’ days.

We blinked, glanced behind us, and awkwardly realized that we’d just overlooked Sanyo’s diminutive booth hideout. Fret not, dear readers, as we managed to throw it in reverse and snap a few pictures of the firm’s three newest projectors, which means you’re guaranteed to see 100-percent of what Sanyo had to offer should you check out the gallery right here.

Hot on the heels of the drool-worthy Z2000 comes a pair of tamer PJs from Sanyo, both of which take size into consideration. The PLC-WXU10 and PLC-WXU30 each offer full 16:9 widescreen support, a 1,280 x 800 native resolution, flexible zoom lens for projecting with as little as a three-foot throw, keystone correction, and a slew of ports including DVI, VGA, composite, S-Video, RS-232, and stereo audio inputs. The WXU10 touts a 400:1 contrast ratio and weighs in at 7.3-pounds, while the WXU30 jumps to a 500:1 contrast ratio and adds 0.7-pounds. The latter, however, also includes Sanyo’s “exclusive PJ Network Interface for wired and wireless networking,” which enables the “monitoring of projector functions and operation from a long distance via a web browser.” Both units are scheduled to be widely available around October, and while the WXU10 will ring up at $1,495, the WXU30 comes in at nearly double that.
