Metal Gear Solid rubber band gun is non-lethal overkill

When you’re caught between the lines of dueling mercenary armies, trapped in a rapidly aging body that doesn’t quite react the way it used to, you need a reliable side arm to protect yourself. That was Solid Snake’s situation in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, his chosen weapon the Silver Wolf pistol, recreated here in as a Japanese fan’s stainless steel and rubber band DIY masterpiece. Constructed of numerous cross-drilled plates and featuring both a laser sight and integrated flashlight, the result looks to be impressively accurate and likely quite painful, as you can see for yourself in a video just below. Bonus reloading footage included!

It’s tough for us to go six months without a newfangled approach to hacking the famed USB missile launcher, so it’s with great joy that we present to you this particular one. By utilizing a spare Wiimote, a USB-enabled PC, a USB missile launcher, a few strips of duct tape and a minor amount of programming knowledge, you too can craft an auto-aiming launcher which can find, aim at and attack IR targets. Grab the aforementioned items and hit the read link, just take care to not poke your eye out, alright?

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Hello_Kitty_AR_15_assault_rifle’; If the Disintegrator had you quivering in your combat boots, we’d recommend grabbing a bullet proof vest and having a seat for this one. Apparently, a fellow in California has dressed up a (legal) AR-15 assault rifle in Hello Kitty fashion for his better half, and while it’d be way too easy to pass this off as a fantastic Photoshop job, the pictures awaiting you in the read link definitely prove otherwise. Cute never looked so evil.

Yeah, using Avurt’s IM-5 launcher and Taser International’s C2 stun gun sure seem like more enjoyable ways to injure-but-not-kill the baddies, but there’s a certain novelty attached to the vision of an uber-powerful Super Soaker. Apparently, a team of Russians are toying with the idea of crafting a non-lethal weapon based around “electro-hydrodynamical effects.” In layman’s terms, what we’re looking at is a device that relies on water jets to bring down enemies whilst minimizing long-term damage, and while we’re not up to speed on all the mathematics that prove this valid, it sounds pretty plausible. And hey, it’s not like ammunition wouldn’t be readily available in many parts of the world. [Warning: PDF read link]

Joining the growing list of celebrities who can’t quit using their cellphones to beat up on others is Foxy Brown, who was recently “charged with assault and possession of a weapon” after allegedly hitting a neighbor with her BlackBerry. Of course, this isn’t the first time Foxy’s temper has flared up, but when she was confronted over the volume of her stereo system, the handset came out (a few days later, mind you) for purposes other than texting, talking, or capturing the impending battle for future viewing. So, you may be wondering how much damage a flung BlackBerry can do, and if that’s the case, here’s your answer: the victim was left with a cut lip and a loose tooth.

While both the Navy and Air Force have recently warmed up to a new robotic friend, a number of military bots-to-be showed their stuff at DARPATech 2007. Among the standouts were a camera-guided Little Dog, the resilient Big Dog, a backpack-portable, fully autonomous Micro Air Vehicle, and a beefed-up version of the MAV (dubbed the Organic Air Vehicle) that can reportedly hover around for two hours. The latter creation was designed to “designate ground targets from the sky and paint targets up to 15-kilometers away with its laser designator,” while the MAV can monitor a 10-kilometer radius “with infrared or visible cameras in hover-and-stare mode.” The aforementioned canines seem to be terrain navigators, which could potentially be studied to improve the locomotion of walking machines in general. Go on, click through for a few glimpses of these friendly fellows — they aren’t armed, yet.Continue reading New military robots showcased at DARPATech 2007

While the Army is already taking good care of our wounded robots patrolling through Iraq, a recent deployment of three special weapons observation remote reconnaissance direct action systems (SWORDS) has placed rifle-equipped bots in the line of fire. The trio, which all handle M249s, are “are remotely controlled by a soldier through a terminal,” and while their exact whereabouts and missions remain classified, the armed machines were reportedly designed to handle “high risk” combat scenarios if necessary. Currently, there’s no record of a SWORD actually firing its weapon, but considering that each of these devices can potentially remove a human from harm, don’t be surprised to see full blown platoons being unleashed when finances allow.
